Want to hear me talk on a podcast? Well, today’s your lucky day.
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of joining the brilliant Philippa Haynes and MARK LEE FCA on the hugely popular Accountants’ Success Secrets Podcast.
We got into the story behind my practice, Fox Clever, and how I carved out a niche as an Ecommerce specialist—helping businesses scale on platforms like Shopify and Amazon.
Seven years in, and I’ve learned a few things. Here are my insights for fellow bookkeepers just getting started:
🔹 The accounting community is one of the most supportive out there. Seriously—don’t struggle in silence. Ask questions. Make connections. You’re not expected to have all the answers. We’ve got your back.
🔹 Find your superpower. Mine? Ecommerce. It took time to figure it out, but once I leaned in, everything changed. A niche doesn’t limit you—it elevates you. It gives you clarity, confidence, and the ability to charge what your expertise is actually worth.
🔹 Trust your gut. Be selective about your clients. If something feels off—it probably is. Red flags are there for a reason. Listen to them.
And most importantly:
🔹 Be unapologetically yourself.
When I first started out, I nearly branded myself ‘The Unlikely Bookkeeper’ —because I didn’t fit the traditional mould. I wasn’t the “typical” accountant, and it made me question if I belonged. I doubted myself.
But let’s be real: that mould is outdated.
There’s a new wave in finance—driven, diverse, disruptive. You don’t need to fit in. You need to stand out.
Be bold. Be different. Be you.
